Care to Ride for Oil Heat Cares So much has happened since Oil Heat Cares kicked off Spring 2004. At the convention in May, we held our first board meeting and the press learned more about Oil Heat Cares and they've helped get the word out. We've gotten the 501C-3 non-profit except status. We've received donations both large and small. The Oil Heat Cares website, www.oilheats.com has been launched. Most importantly, our neighbors in need have received new oil heating systems, compliments of many of the Chapters of NAOHSM. A little about some of the projects – on Long Island a Gold star Mother got a complete makeover of her home and the Nassau-Suffolk Chapter played a key role in this by installing a new heating system, the Delaware Valley Chapter took care of the heating needs in a home Coatesville area home for unwed mothers. The Eastern CT Chapter helped out a family whose young son has a chronic illness that requires his mother stay home to care for him and in South Jersey a project has been approved to install a new hot water heater in the home of a 91-year old man that has trouble keeping up with his basic requirements, least along buying a badly needed heater. These are examples of projects that fit the mission of Oil Heat Cares. Our chapters have all donated their labor and much equipment and supplies have been donated as well. It’s actually tough to buy equipment! So many of our manufacturers seem pleased to be involved and when we request a discount, they just send out the equipment. Now on to another important element of this program: Fundraising. Many industry people – Bob Hedden, Dan Holohan, George Lanthier, John Levey, Alan Mercurio, Dave Yates along with generous manufacturers have come together to deliver seminars. The most recent is a seminar that Dan Holohan presented, "Dead Men Steam" November 9th - and special thanks to sponsors, Bacharach and Wallace-Eannace/ITT Industries-Bell&Gossett-McDonald-Miller. This event raised over $5,000.00 for Oil Heat Cares. So what is next on the horizon? How about participating in the "Care to Ride" event to be held Monday, May 15th in Hartford? This event is being spearheaded by Don Farrell, Oilheating Journal. At present, R.W. Beckett, Energy Kinetics, Armstrong Air Conditioning, Bradford White, Burnham Corp, Honeywell, Fuel Merchants of New Jersey, Advanced Fuel Solutions and Kerr Heating have signed on as sponsors and there are still sponsorships available for the event. Individuals and companies are invited to participate in the event –For bicycle riders, the 35 mile ride will take you from the CT Expo Center to the town of Glastonbury and back. There is also a shorter ride of 15 miles and a walking division as been added as well. Participants will be required to make a minimum pledge of $100. To do that, they'll ask friends, family and neighbors to help them make their pledged amount. Don's got an aggressive goal – he'd like to turn over a check for $20,000.00 to Oil Heat Cares. We invite everyone to get involved. There are basically two requirements – the recipient must own their home and the product must be an oil heating appliance. Other than that, we welcome the involvement and support of everyone. To learn more about Oil Heat Cares, go to www.oilheatcares.com.
