Oil Heat Cares Fundraiser Brings Home the Green -= October 2009 =- Lancaster County PA, known for the Amish and pretty green countryside was transformed into a different kind of green theme for one day, September 30th. It was the venue for a special Oilheat Cares Benefit event. The Southeast Pa and Central PA Chapters - along with other guests met at the newly renovated Manheim Township High School, Lancaster County PA. The appeal about this tour was the fact that this school was the first in the country to install geothermal for their heating and cooling needs. Of course, we expected to hear about Geothermal but there were many more surprises in store for our group. It was evident from the presentation conducted by the school's engineer, Jeff Harris and Tom Koch, plant manager, that a project such of this magnitude was a dream come true for engineers. When the school went through their renovation process, they implemented just about any type of energy technology available today - from the condensing boilers that handle their domestic hot water, solar, radiant heat - this school has more tubing in the floor for radiant heat than any school in the US - to the special suspended film insulated glass windows that qualified them for a LEED Silver designation. On top of that, an electronic kiosk allows users an opportunity to monitor energy performance. After our tour of the school, we headed off to the "Barn" a renovated 250 year old barn. Upon our arrival we were met by three outdoor trailers representing regular Care to Ride (Oil Heat Cares major fundraiser) sponsors – Peerless highlighting the Pinnacle Boiler, Energy Kinetics with solar and Crown Boilers with Energy Star rated products. Inside the “Barn” Honeywell showcased some of their latest control technology and Burnham Boilers showcased the latest energy efficient boiler technologies. After a buffet dinner sponsored by local oil dealers - B.G. Mellinger, Worley & Obetz and Schwanger Brothers - Dan Holohan shared one of his popular seminars, "Heating Around the World".
